History
The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress was a four-engine heavy bomber developed in the 1930s for the United States Army Air Corps.
Initially sent to drop bombs on Vienna from a base in Italy in November 1944., target got changed due to circumstances to Maribor, where it got hit and had to make a landing at the Island Of Vis, where it crashed into the Adriatic some 150m from the south shore.
The Dive
The wreck lies at 72m in a sandy ground, in almost perfect condition. Visibility at the dive site is usually very good.
GPS coordinates are 43°01,033’N, 16°13,078’E
Depth: 65 – 72 m
Suitable for: Technical dive site, only for very experienced divers.
B-17 is one of the top dive sites in Croatia.
